Philanthropy in Action: Iwi-led economic revitalisation with a social driver

For decades, Opotiki has featured as one of New Zealand’s most deprived populations. Local iwi Te Whakatohea are determined to turn this around. Their efforts have been strongly supported by the local community and District Council. They all envisage a prosperous future for their community – the place and the people – based upon the traditional relationship with the sea and the land. For nearly a decade there has been concerted work to create the potential for sustainable economic and social development centered on aquaculture.
